Since this is day ONE its going to be a multi-feature extravaganza of epic porportions [or until i get boerd and/or gotta go to class].So sit back and hold onto your asses assholders

Movie review tiems nao

We will start with one of the most epic movies ever made. This is one of the movies you must see or you will not be allowed into clubs dfr men like the Elk lodge the Glitterroom any UFC event or Club Chubby

Welcome to Cappies cultural corner [or awsome stuff you havent heard of but should] Big_trouble_in_little_china

This movie poster looks bad ass yes but trust me it doesnt even begin to do this movie justice.Technically this stars Kurt Russell but his character is mostly part of a team of bad asses.I am only gonna dicuss So much of the movie because you need to go see this yourself

The storyline follows Russells character Jack Burton a bad ass trucker with the testosterone of 8 men and reflexes turned up to 11 and his good friend Wang Chi a good hearted Chinese guy that just so happens to be a bad ass kung fu expert thats embroiled in all sorts of crazy ancient Chinese mythological secrets.See Wangs fiance gets kidnapped in the airport and Jack and him go on a rescue mission in the deepest parts of Chinatowns underground.Turns out a multi-millennia old ancient Chinese Sorcerer Lo Pan needs a girl with these rare perfect Jade colored eyes [that his fiance has] to break the curse placed on him by the Emperor thousands of years ago.Early in the move they end up in the middle of a kung fu street fight between Lo Pans cult and Wangs contingent of friends in Chinatown we realize how crazy this movie is going to be when Lo Pans generals show up controlling the weather no-selling bullets and throwing lightning then Lo Pan himself no sells get ran over by Jacks Truck the pork chop express[You GOTTA be a bad ass to take being hit by a truck that awesome].They get joined by a few more great action movie cliched characters like a nosy but hot reporter lady and an old an old Chinese tour bus driver that just happens to know enough ancient Chinese Alchemy to save their asses etc.It plays out like an epic legend that just got transplanted into modern times

The movie has tons of action alot of tongue in cheek comedy which highlights how aware they are of the sheer audacity of the movie some pretty well researched references to Chinese mythology and good use of said research to make it more exciting exotic or just funny [Chinese got alot of hells].If you watch this movie and dont immediately wanna go to the closest Chinatown style section of your city and start snooping around for ancient Taoists sorcerers or man-eating monster "just in case" then you have no god damn soul

This movie didnt hit big when it first came out no thanks to bad reviews from everyone under the sun many of which didnt get that it.Alot of them thought characters like Lo Pan were made-up caricatures with racist overtones not realizing that alot of this was based on actual mythology and Lo Pan on a historical character[That became a mythological legend].Since that tiem the movie has become cult phenomena as people grabbed it on video tapes and actually watched [and loved it] themselves. Its a great balls on bad ass movie with a good blend of action and humor with excellent use of fantastic elements that only work when you realize its basically a Chinese myth you stepped into that just co-incidentally happens in the late 80s

Games that you should play but might not have already

Shadowrun for the Genesis

Welcome to Cappies cultural corner [or awsome stuff you havent heard of but should] Shadowrun_%281994%29_Coverart

You can expect to see alot of old reviews from this article.Mostly because I know these are all available to everyone and at least demi-legally since they arent being produced anymore

The Genesis Shadowrun game is an unusual game in countless ways for this era

1] Its an adventure/RPG style game set in the near future. Most RPGs in this time were following the Dragon Quest or Square formula so this was incrediblly refreshing for the time

2] Its one of the first Sandbox games ever made.I swear this game is like a GTA years before that sort of thing existed. You can have as much fun just raiding corperate buildings or shaking down gangs for portection money as you can hacking into bank accounts or actually going on with the games storyline

3] Its actually a licesned game which turned out to be excellent. Its based on the Shadowrun tabletop traditional RPG [Stuff like Dungeons and Dragons] and follows it amazingly closely. It takes advantage of having a world and history designed for them already and gives you alot of plot points and references from the source material that REALLY draws you into the idea that your in the year 2050 where magic has returned to the Earth and exists happily with Technology living in a somewhat Dystopic corperate controled future as the merry slightly socio-pathic Robin hoods that slip through the cracks of society

Basic plot goes like this. The main character is a man called "Joshua" who sees his brother a fairly accomplished Shadowrunner[One of the merry me types ive mentioned earlier] get killed on TV in a sensationalistic report that the corps later hush up.You go to Seattle intending to find out who killed him and avenge his death.Fairly straight forward premise and obviously you can imagine it ends up bigger than you expect and turns into massive mystery that needs unraveled.Fun for sure but the real meat of the game comes from from every second of fun you have walking around Seattle

See you cant just go around do whatever you want or shoot whatever you want and expect to win.The games based on the Shadowrun combat system which can be lethal. You know the near future is a dangerous place which most clothing is routinely made with bullet resistant materials "just in case".To get ahead in the game your going to need to acquire money connections skills and lots of artillery. While the game doesnt give much background information on Joshua [Which likely isnt even his real name] you get to choose a basic archtype for his starting abilities and it indicates hes at least a somewhat accomplished small time runner'.You dont know anyone in Seattle have little money and are so lightly armed that a few gang members on the street could easily kick the hell out of you before your done shooting down 1 of them so your gotta do some shadowrunning for the various "Mr.Johnsons" which is a SR codeword for "Guy who doesnt want to be named but has work of questionable nature ready for you".It starts with simple jobs doing stuff like delivering packages one from one place to another in the seediest parts of town [That have a giger coutner ran over occasionally that goes wild lol] to slaughtering the flesh eatting VITAS plauge infected people in derilict parts of town called "Ghouls" to hacking the local conviance stores work scheduale to infiltrating a megacorps building to "reallocate" certain resources information or even employees to another corp

Various other things happen along the way like random events happen in the streets where your given multiple choices on how to handle things.Examples include people trying to sell you illegal weapons the Lone Star police force puling you over for questioning [Cops formed a corp for themselves and now only police areas when paid while becoming more beligerant and corrupt than before] Combat mechanics happen in real time with targeting single opponents happeing at the touch of a button and the battle mechanics happening unseen so it just looks like big ass gun explosives or magic firefights. It can be pretty intense and strain the consoles 16but system a tad when it has to register 6 or more people onscreen and bullets are going from point A to point B about as fast as they would IRL but it doesnt slowdown at all.Guns are straightfowrad and hurt like hell often killing unarmored character sin one or two shots but in keeping with SR tradition armor is SLIGHTLY ahead in the arms race in 2040 so good armor gives you loads of survivability.Magic bypasses armor completely but takes longer to use than guns making it your anti-tank weaponm of choice.Your main character is pretty customizable as he either be a gunner deck or magicuser the stat system is fairly unrestricted so a Magicuser can be buff and good with electronics and you can still hire other characters to coverup things you dont do well or just provide extra guns in a fight

The Hacking sequances for the game were pretty avdanced for the time and involves your Hacker characters avatar in a 3rd person view encountering different geometric nodes that represent programming functions. The combat happens with different programs that are supposed to symbolically represent progams interacting to the brain of the user as he subconciously shuts down defensive counter-measures,Cool concept with the effciency of your gear and skills combining to determine the hit/miss as well as cooldown time of your programs. The actual functions of the nodes DO work so you can do things like use hacking to shut down alarms in corperate buildings raid their datafiles to learn stuff about the games plot or unlock magnetically locked doors

Sometimes I abandon the plot for the game a while and just run around enjoying myself and occasionally doing missions or even the games couple sidequests. You can freely wander around the sections for the most part the random events can be entertaining just to go through and getting your stats/reputation high enough to enter any of the clubs or to get the Mafia or Yakuza wanting to recruit you can be a blast in and of itself.Doing enough missions with the different hireable shadowrunners all around the game eventually builds relationships with them based on your levels of success and while a friendly lines may not SEEM like much in the grand scheme of things I still dont know many modern games that have NPCs enthusasticaly [and COMPETENTLY] working with you while having some sort of personality and life outside of your character[All the runners available will tell you about their background if you ask and it exists for no reason but to give you insight on them and the setting. It really draws you in alot more than taking an annoying guy bowling every 20 minutes like certain sandbox games that exist nowadays

Some of the games biggest strengths can also be weaknesses. You can build yourself up to a level where your more cybered up than the terminator wielding more artillery than most small countries or as a Shamen that can turn guys into liquid at a glance or instantly reviving the chunky salsa that used to be your buddies face with a finger flick. The thing is you CAN beat the whole game with moderate stats and gear and handle most of the games challenges with some careful play and judicious use of emergancy medical care. The hacking parts of the game are fun and you can get all sorts of information on where you need to go next or even see your own police record but you need really high stats AND top flight gear to be consistantly successful so you might not see all this stuff.Sometimes the games a little vague on what you do next to advance the plot and you might need to ask around for a while for information you need. The games ending was also a little too brief for my taste and i had a bigger sense of accomplishment from the hidden super-hard mission [which you will have to find for yourself]

Still all in all this game rocks. You might be used to having alot of freedom in games nowadays with the sandbox crae but this was a game years ahead of everything else on the console and it really stood out.Its still very playable today and can really occupy your free time

Cappies Culture Corner presents "A game you should have played already"

Live a Live for the SNES

Welcome to Cappies cultural corner [or awsome stuff you havent heard of but should] LiveALiveBoxArt

Sadly for us unfortunate fat stupid turtle buttstomping mortal dingbat playing Americans this game was never released over here.Damn unfortunate too because this was a very innovative game that at HEART is an RPG but alot more

What sets Live a Live apart is the fact that its not one game but several altogether.Your give a choice of several different time periods to play where you control a different protagonist in different eras in time. Each era offers something very unique outside of stand medieval RPG fare.Ill give you the basic rundown

Prehistoric-You play a young Caveman who discovers and protects a female from outside his tribe.Theres no dialogue the entire scenario as the Caveman havent really mastered language. Most of your equipment and healing items from using your sense of smell to track down random encounters and hunt them for food or weapon building material.Theres also a surprising number of secrets so hidden you wont find them without a guide as well as a hidden Boss that could slap around Emerald Weapon. Its fairly light and comical at times for the most part though

Ancient China-You play an aging Kung Fu master looking to pass down his arts to a worthy student before he dies. Most of this scenario is spent tracking down potential students each and then training them before the end of the scenario. Each potential student has their own strengths and weakness and the choice of successor is up to you. This scenario starts out pretty lighthearted then turns deathly serious later on

Bakumatsu Japan-In this scenario you play a Ninja during the civil war era as Japan left the medieval era and was plunged headlong into the modern era.Your tasked with rescuing a prisoner from a fortress that can end the fighting and bring peace to the country. The entire game takes place in this castle and the real gimmick here is the options to make it through. You gain different rewards depending on how you advance with a special reward for personally killing every single human in sight[Harder than it sounds] a special reward if you avoid killing any women[and then wait a few seconds for the other secret reward heh heh] and an even greater reward if you make it through the entire complex without killing a single human being [Way harder than it sounds but totally worth it].There are also a horde of secrets and extra tough battles hidden around. This scenario is hardcore serious the whole way through

Old West-You play a bad ass poncho wearing gruff gunslinger with no name.Sounds familiar eh?Thi scenario is sort of short. You arrive in town alongside a rival gunslinger and have your eventual duel postponed to help the town your in defend itself from a gang of outlaws. The object here is to find ways to set-up traps to take out the oncoming gang and minimize the damage they cause before you confront them.It starts pretty adventure/puzzle gameish and depending on how well you set-up the traps can end with a difficult or easy final battle.Theres some comedy in this thing and it goes by too fast for anything overly serious to happen. Some of the traps will make you chuckle too

Modern era-Play a game of Street Fighter.I wish there was more too it but this scenario is obviously an homage to SF2 with your Japanese main character determined to be the best fighter on earth.Unlike the other story-heavy battlelight scenarios this one is ALL combat and an opponent select screen. The gimmick here is every fighter has at least one special technique your main character can learn if he gets hit by it[Think Blue Magic from other square games].When you have beaten everyone and learned their techniques you gert the final opponent in a hard as balls fight.Good luck

Near Future-If the above scenario is an Homage to SF2 this is an homage to every near future anime imaginable. You play an orphaned teenager in a heavily mechanized future who just so happens to be gifted with psychic powers. This is one of the longer scenarios with alot of story tons to do and lot of optional stuff to tinker with.Your psychic powers can be used to rear peoples minds to get other important kinds of dialogue theres a whole technology tinkering minigame that will remind you of the pre-history chapter again and a little robot party member to customize. This scenario is mostly serious in theme but theres a few comedic bits here and there. It culminates in a GIANT MECHA BATTLE complete with its own dramatic awesome theme music.GO GO BURIKI DAIOH!

Far Future-Survival Horror years before Resident Evil. This time around you play a little spherical robot ironically named Cube on a spacecraft transporting a dangerous alien creature for scientific study. This adventure is part murder mystery part adventure game and all downright creepy.Theres no actual combat. This scenario mostly seems like an homage to Alien but fits little bits from other sci-fi and horror related subjects.Play this thing with the lights off at night for maximum effect

Medieval-This hidden scenario only opens up after completing all the others. After playing through all these weird scenarios its actually a bit disconcerting to be going though incredibly generic standard RPG fare and for the first time having random encounters like a regular RPG.The whole set-up with the spiky blond haired RPG hero beloved by all Magician complaining world weary old adventure buddies heroic dialogue about love conquering all and a princess that needs saving from a demon actually seems weird now compared to the other games. They are doing it on purpose its done that generically in an almost mocking manner while the story just gets darker and more bleak as it goes.

Theres a final scenario but ill let you discover how it works on your own

Ive mentioned before that alot of typical RPG elements dont exist this game. For one thing there are no random encounters no money system in most scenarios some dont even have alot of combat.Actual battles in this one occur on a 2.5-D grid system making combat more about tactical positioning than simply spamming uber move number-12 over and over. The characters tend to have a horde of moves to use in combat and the grid lets different ones remain useful by having areas of effect different ranges chargey times or the ability to move your character for free in addition to standard abilities like status effect. Some of the most obscenely powerful ones even wear your character out and debuff them as another balancing mechanism. All in all the game even keeps combat interest in every era with every character every party member form every era

The game is all around great but I had a few minor complaints. Some of the secrets in the different parts are REALLY hard to find or downright impossible without a guide.Theres a scaling problem with the final scenerio where battles scale to your level BUT all your characters are wildly different in strength ESPECIALLY if you trained some guys to take on the couple of option uber-bosses

Still all in all this is a great game that gives you a very unique experiance a good challenge alot of variety in game a few laughs and a great sense of accomplishment for everything you manage to do.If you can fire up your emulators i HIGHLY reccomend this game

Movie review time,Heres another 80s classic that underperformed at the box office but became a major cult hit in later years. This is a personal favorite of mine here called

Welcome to Cappies cultural corner [or awsome stuff you havent heard of but should] Labyrinth_ver2

Its not a particularly complicated story.A teenage girl is stuck babysitting her little brother which is interfering with rehearsing her part for a play shes in and is driving her up the wall. The thing is all the flowery talk from her speech and references to a "king of Goblins" in the play attracts the attention of the REAL king of the goblins who answer when she gets angry and wishes her little brother away. The Goblin King Jareth is played by David Bowie [You may remember him from Venture Bros. nowadays] and gives the girl a chance to save her brother by traveling through his Labyrinth and retrieving him within 13 hours. While she focuses on that we see that Jareth is just as interested in her and works to break her will and seduce her throughout the journey[Albeit in a roundabout PG manner]

I guess Jennifer Connelly is the main character as Sarah but honestly the Labyrinth and its inhabitants are easily the best part of the story.Sure its her story of growing up learning responsibility and compassion but the insane singing Goblins giant muppets that talk to rocks The bog of eternal stench to the manliest monarch in tights [Seriously there are fan sites dedicated to his bulge no lie] are makes the movie so GD fun to watch. The whole journey is filled with fantastic creative creatures and situations and even the couple musical scenes just help push the plot along

This is the kind of movie that could never be made today because fat bastards like George Lucas want everything to be CGI so we will never again see something tangible right in front of you and give the actors something real to interact with.David Bowie isnt singing "Magic Dance" to a ping-pong ball hanging in front of a bluescreen hes turning to something that for all intents and purposes is a Goblin servert sitting right next to him singing along. Its a sad thing seeing all these damn CGI movies where everyone has the delivery of drunk Keanu Reeves because pingpong balls dont stimulate their imaginations any.Movies like The Neverending Story The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth have a kind of magic we simply havent seen since the 80s.

When you watch this movie let it take you back.Be an excited little kid again and see the muppets like you did watching Sesame Street.Im not going to go too deep into analyzing this movie because I just want to do it yourselves.Enjoy the fantasy and let yourself get engrossed in the setting. If you havent seen this movie before you definitely wont regret it

Ah Labyrinth, one of my all time favorite movies even tho I usually cant stand choreographed singing. It helps that Jeniffer Connoly is smokin hot. Of course David Bowie is awesome too.

Now that ive gotten most of my schoolwork out of the way I can go back to running Cappies Culture Corner.Behold now what may be greatest movie ever made in the history of anything or race in a universe where movies could be possible

Welcome to Cappies cultural corner [or awsome stuff you havent heard of but should] The_Last_Dragon_%281985%29

This is the best movie of all time.Nothing comes close not Citizen Kane not City Lights not the Godfather nothing..If you dont believe that its because you were A] Not alive in the 80s or B[ Were alive in the 80s but were a godless commie who hated all things good pure American and awesome

Ok now that im gushing ill explain. In the mid-80s Martial Arts movies started making a post Bruce Lee comeback. While cheesy movies had been coming in and out of circulation for years once the Karate Kid came out it opened a floodgates for this kind of movie.A good martial arts flick had to have action but more importantly it had to have some humanity and philosophy behind it.So in addition to the Mr.Miyagi's of the world we had kids learning about work Ethic in "Best of the Best" and that sort of thing. The Last Dragons spin was a young man discovering his place in life and his own self-worth,The biggest catch is he just so happens to be Black and this movie was done by the owners of Motown

Now the people behind it probably intended to for this to be the "black Bruce Lee" movie but it ended up better than JUST that alone.First you have to accept that the movie is a bit cheesy and over the top,This helped actually make the moe even more enjoyable and it has been argued many times that two of the most important characters BAD acting actually helped make the movie better.

The main character "Bruce" Leeroy Green plays a kindly respectful martial arts student who wishes to become a martial arts master like his idol Bruce Lee.He lives virtually like a Monk and sticks out like a sore thumb in the middle of Harlem and the usually reaction of the jive talking residents provides a good bit of comedy. The actor playing him was a real life Black Belt with alot of MAs talent but no acting ability. This actually HELPED since his simple stilted dialogue actually seemed appropriate for a very disjointed overly focused young man that is totally focused on Martial arts.He ends up just sounding very simple and genuine and if anything is confused about why people dont take him seriously just because hes not jive talking like everyone else in the ghetto

Then theres the villain. Now the actor playing said main villain is not a good actor. He also isnt a good martial Artists like ther main character and seems to have taken a 2 week course in cheesy blacksplotation style Kung fu complete with stilled movements and awkward bent knee spin kicks.Maybe its terrible BUT................Man could this guy ham it up.He isnt just the bad guy he is "SHO NUFF.... THE SHOGUN......OF HARLEM".Weird as the main character is Sho Nuff is even weirder.Sure hes jive talking like everyone else but hes a jive talking martial arts expert that tries to act like some ancient Chinese Warlord terrorizing the countryside he claims to rule with his gang of flunkies. He doesnt just enter a room in his scenes he ENTERS and demands that his flunkies line up and answer about who is "The BADDEST" and "The PRETTIEST mofo in all ah Halem".Anywhere else and it would be cheesy but here its AWESOME and he really seems like a good fighter thats just taken his obsession to far[While being badly researched and using Tiger style Kung Fu and a Japanese title].People obviously think hes an idiot but hes a 6' 10" idiot that can shatter boards with a slap of his hand and kick through cinder blocks so when when he says "Who is the MASTAH?" every else says "SHO NUFF!"

When you watch this move dont hate how cheesy it is ENJOY how cheesy it is.Movies like this werearent bad yet are "So bad its good" are a rarity.Enjoy Leeroys search for a great martial arts master with a secret legendary power[The glow kicks the shit out of SSJ] and Shoo Nuffs over the top antics trying to get Leeroy irto fighting him.The fight scene at the end of the movie after Leeroy has no choice but to confront him ALONE is enough reason to watch it.Even Sho Nuffs stilted movements get covered well and the epic battle is just that its EPIC

Is it really the best movie ever made?

The Last Dragon is good but it's no 'Clones of Bruce Lee'. Saying Last Dragon is better than Citizen Kane and Godfather is just silly.

Wow its been a year and im revisiting this fun topic especially since im getting some time off school coming right up.Id like to introduce you all to Emperor Norton. The First Emperor of the United States of America and the Protector of Mexico

Welcome to Cappies cultural corner [or awsome stuff you havent heard of but should] Emperor_Joshua_A__Norton_I

Joshua Norton was a businessman of some wealth from South Africa who emigrated to San Fransisco in the mid 1800s.He had a good measure of success turning a 40,000 dollar investment from his parents estate into an impressive 250K fortune which was a huge amount of money in that era..This was all well and good until Norton saw an opportunity to make even more money when China experienced a famine in 1849 and decided to ban the importation of Rice He then cornered the market on rice using his fortune knowing that the price would skyrocket and he could eventually sell it for a massive profit

The problem was that Peru turned out to have a pretty impressive rice growing set-up going on and appeared out of nowhere with a massive shipment of rice which cause the price to plummet as the demand was met with a glut of already high priced rice Norton then spent several years in count saying he was misled by rice deals as to the quality of said rice but couldnt get the contract nullified and in the end was left destitute by 1858.It wouldnt be much of a story if things ended there with just some random businessman losing his fortune but after a few years out of the public eye Joshua Norton suddenly appears on the scene in impressive fashion

It seems the financial difficulties had left poor Norton a little mentally unstable.Seeing several things he disliked in American politics Norton stepped forward and wrote a letter telling Congress to disband and that he was now the First ever Emperor of the United States of America. He would begin walking around in one Military uniform and beaver hat with peacock feathers his cane and two stray dogs acting the role that his insanity lead him to believe was appropriate

Norton would continue to issue decrees over the years calling for the dissolution of Congress banning their assembly calling upon the army to overthrow the government in a peaceful Coup and called upon the Catholic Church to declare him Emperor officially. While he never quite gained all the recognition he was calling for he did manage to make a big difference in his home town of San Fransisco

See the people down there took a liking to his sheer audacity and sincere belief that he was now a divine benevolent Monarch looking out for the good of the people of the United States. He created an idea of a suspension bridge that would one day inspire the creation of the Golden Gate Bridge. He began personally acting as an unofficial safety inspector throughout the city making sure public works were maintained he issued his own currency which was honored in San Fransisco no play would open without inviting the Emperor and seeking his approval Restaurants gave him free meals and hoped for his seal of approval making it as a restaurant of quality and often engaged in philosophical discussions around the city.

The good Emperor was once arrested in 1867 by a police officer who attempted to have him committed.Fortunately the chief of police noted that the Emperor had "shed no blood; robbed no one; and despoiled no country; which is more than can be said of his fellows in that line" and freed him.The Emperor bore no grudge and quickly issued a royal pardon to the officer forgiving him for his assault on his royal personage.

His greatest moment came during a race riot in the Chinese section of town in the 1870s.There was always alot of tension with the Chinese and violent riots would often break out with them as targets. The Emperor cared for "His Chinese subjects" as much as any other and he was able to quell a potential large riot by merely interposing himself with a growing mob and daring them to go through him while merely standing in one spot reciting the lords prayer

In 1870 during the Census of the United States one Joshua Norton 50 years old living at 624 commercial street was listed and with the occupation of "Emperor".

Said emperor would reach the end of his life by 1880 collapsing in the street on his way to a lecture and with a carriage unable to arrive in time to take him to a hospital. He died in relative poverty and was to be buried in a simple coffin had the city not arranged a proper funeral for a Monarch. His funeral was attended by 30,000 people [About 10% of the city at the time] and several newspaper solemnly noted the passing of the honored Monarch that the city grew to love

Relevant to the whole Final Fantasy 7 fandom. I bring up Final Fantasy Tactics to "FF Fans" and they reply with "Oh Yeah! I have that on my DS!" -Sigh- FFT is closely related to Tactics Ogre. The original FFT boasted sprites that were so plausible to look at by the eye. Spells were detailed and vibrant. Have you ever cast Holy in that game? How about summoning Bahamaut? The story was deep and orientated towards an Adult Audience. It's difficulty curve is pretty crazy, requiring a great deal of grinding and class changing. With about more than 20 classes you could have a dragoon jumping around the map while casting off holy spells. Final Fantasy Tactics or it's PSP Remake. Is my most favorite FF game and it deserves such a spot.
